7 Ways to Make Your Home Extra Fabulous This Season

Entering the fall season has taken a little longer whether wise here in the southeast. It is still warmer than usual which makes it a little more difficult for me to get into that fall decorating spirit. But time marches on and it is time to get our homes decorated with fall foliage and decor.

Autumn is one of my favorite times of the year. I love the crisp cool weather, the colors of the changing leaves and the smells of all things fall. Our homes become cozy places to gather with friends and family to enjoy each other’s company, great food and fall sports. There are several ways you can spruce up your house for the season without having to overhaul or clash with your existing decor.

7. Turn Up the Texture

Every store this time of year has seasonal blankets, throws and pillows that you can use to increase the cozy textures already present in your home. Choose ones that pull-out colors which compliment your existing color scheme. And be sure to choose items that have variety of textures and feels.

6. Rugs to Sink Your Toes Into

If you have spring/summer rugs in your home, now is the time to swap them out for the warmer colors and textures in fall/winter rugs. Even just changing up or adding throw rugs to your kitchen and hallways can make it feel so much warmer.

5. Window Treatments to Keep You Warm

Window treatments can totally change the feel of a room. If you have sheers or light weight linen on your windows, consider a treatment made of fabric with more texture such as a heavier weight linen or maybe even something softer such as a suede or velvet. Leave these up throughout the fall and winter to make your house warmer and more energy efficient.

4. A Fireplace Mantel to Smile About

Decorating a mantel with small pumpkins, pine cones, and seasonal foliage sprigs is one of my favorite fall decor ideas. The possibilities are endless as to what you can use and it becomes a focal point in your home. Something you can enjoy every day.

3. Your Favorite Scents of the Season

Pumpkin, all spice, cinnamon, apple pie...all these scents cause an immediate association to our favorite aspects of fall. Baking and cooking is not the only way to fill a home with autumn aromas. Candles, diffusers, wax warmers, and household sprays are a much easier way to get the smells of the season throughout your home.

2. Fall Foliage at Home

Don't forget to add natural items to your home during this time of the year. Plants such as Rosemary, Mums, Crotons, African violets, Amaryllis, Shamrock plants, and Christmas cactus are just a few of my favorites. You can also add spruce, pine cones, cinnamon sprigs or other dried flowers to arrangements.

1. A Place to Gather Loved Ones Close

Everyone loves an inviting space, so arrange your room that centers around the fireplace, making it the star of the room. Or your position your furniture so that conversation can flow easily between those in the room. Both will give you more seasonal warmth!

Making your space extra special during this time of year can be easy just by incorporating a few of these ideas into your decorating plan. Do as little or as much as feels comfortable with your lifestyle. Most importantly, just enjoy the time with your family.
