3 Window Treatment Categories You Need to Consider for Your Best Home Office

A home office is now in almost every home we visit and is one of the rooms most requested for window treatments. As with any other room in the house, there are several things to consider when deciding on the type of treatment that will serve you best.

Do you need to diffuse or block out natural light due to glare on the computer monitor? Does your office face a busy road and require privacy? When using your office, do you want to be able to adjust the amount of light coming in through the window? The answers to these questions will lead you in the direction as to what type of treatment you need. Below are three options to consider.

1. Helpful Roller & Cellular Shades

Roller, Solar and Cellular shades have become increasing popular in the past few years. Each works well in an office. There are several benefits to these types of shades. They basically disappear into a header and completely leave a window open, they can be cordless or motorized (there is a lot to love about motorized window treatments), and they come in a variety of fabrics and colors.

Roller and cellular shades can be either light filtering or blackout out, while solar shades come in different percentages of openness (meaning they can allow more/less visibility through the shade itself). The main downside is that they don't have the ability to control the amount of light allowed in beyond how much you can open the shade.

Given the wide variety of fabrics and operating systems, these types of treatments are wonderful for many homeowners.

2. Versatile Blinds & Plantation Shutters

Whereas the shades mentioned above do not allow the adjustment of light control beyond raising and lowering the shade, blinds and shutters give you that option. One of the things homeowners like best about these treatments is that specific light control.

Blinds are one of the most affordable options. Shutters are on the opposite end of the spectrum cost-wise. Both can be motorized, although they normally are not. Both come in composite materials that are good where humidity or warping is a concern. They can also both be fabricated from wood with many different stain and paint choices. Shutters can also be made to fit arched, oval, or triangular windows, which means those odd shaped windows can be covered.

3. Customizable Shade Pairings

As a soft furnishings fabricator, I love to combine fabric treatments with hard treatments. The fabric adds color, can hide headers or battery packs, and will absorb noise so that voices will not bounce off the hard surfaces.

Valances and faux roman shades can drop below the header of roller, solar, and cellular shades so that when the shades are up, you can't see them at all. Panels are a great way to hide battery packs for motorized shades and can soften the hard lines of blinds and shutters. Combinations of treatments can finish off an office and make it a productive place to work.

Windows can be tricky to cover. Hiring a professional to give you all the options is your best first step towards a functional and beautiful home office.
