3 Steps to Designing the Ultimate Outdoor Living Space

In the south spring, summer and fall mean that we can spend lots of time in our outdoor living spaces. For many people these areas are just as important as our indoor spaces! We can enjoy the beauty and tranquility of nature and spend time connecting with our families without technology getting in the way. Not to mention the great grilling and entertaining opportunities. Read on for a few tips to make you outdoor living exceptional!

1. Plan your outdoor space first.

Take a few minutes to look at what you have to work with in your outdoor area. Then imagine how you would love to use that space. Do you want to have your morning coffee there? Use it for entertaining with family and friends? Quiet time with a book or meditation? Make a mental list of things you would want to be in that space.

2. Layer from the ground up.

Outdoor spaces are really not that much different than indoor spaces. Many of the same concepts apply to both spaces. Think about how you layer a room from the ground up and do the same for your outdoor living area. Start with choosing an outdoor rug, move to outdoor furniture with appropriate fabrics and then accessories.

3. Choose the right materials.

Speaking of furnishings and accessories. All those items need to be certified for outdoor use. Otherwise you will be replacing things before they are really worn out. These days there are so many furniture options available as well as a vast array of fabric choices in so many colors and textures.  Sunbrella is probably one the best known sources for outdoor fabric but almost every brand offers an outdoor line. Look for fabrics that have a UV rating of at least 3 stars. A UV rating of 3 stars classifies the fabric as UV resistant. A fabric with a star rating of 4-5 stars is considered highly UV resistant. These fabrics are great for outdoor use with 5 stars being the best of the best. Highly UV resistant fabrics will last longer when consistently exposed to sunlight.
