How to Hang Drapes to Make a Room Look Larger

Beautiful drapery hung correctly will make any room feel taller, wider and more elegant. Taking the time to install them at the correct level will make a world of difference in how your whole room presents itself. The space-enhancing characteristics of drapery are due entirely to the way they are hung. In the following paragraphs you will find 3 tips for doing this the right way.

1. How High Should You Place Your Curtain Rod?

Begin with where you need to place the rod. If the drapery is already fabricated you will have to work with that measurement so that they sit slightly on the floor or just above the floor, depending on your preference. If you are having drapery made then you can place the rod just about wherever you wish. It is best placed several inches above the window casing. I tend to prefer about 2/3 of the way up from the casing while others like to place the rod right in the middle of the area available.

By placing the rod higher it pulls the eye up and makes the room feel taller and grander. While placing it too close to the casing will make the room feel shorter.

2. Where Should You Mount Brackets for Drapes?

The most common request we get as fabricators is to make sure that the drapery does not block too much of the window or view. By placing the brackets several inches outside each window, the drapery will cover more of the wall and less of the window itself.

This technique can visually widen the appearance of the window and is especially useful for small windows in a large room. The room will feel much brighter and more spacious.

3. How Long Should Your Curtains Be?

The correct length for drapery is completely a personal preference and depends on your style and taste. It also should be considered if you have pets in the house since some have been know to "sleep" in curtains puddled (with lots of fabric) on the floor! The opposite, drapery that is too short, is also not pleasing to the eye. They just look like they were not made correctly! The best length is for them to barely skim the ground or to sit 1/4-1/2" off the floor if they are going to be opened and closed often.

The smallest details, such as where the drapery sits, can elevate the look of a home. It makes your home feel more elegant and professionally composed.
